PLATO LESSON DELIVERY AND AUTHORING 1
PLATO COURSEWARE DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY (PCD2)
Under NOS 2 Levels 670, 678 and 688
(PLATO Release 40.1)
A. ABSTRACT
PLATO Lesson Delivery and Authoring 1 and PLATO Courseware
Development and Delivery System (PCD2) have been updated to
PLATO release level 40.1 to run under NOS 2.5.2 level 670,
NOS 2.5.2 level 678, and NOS 2.5.3 level 688. This release
includes support for the CDC CYBER 17X, 170-700 series
systems and 170-800 and 180-800 series models 810, 815, 825,
830, 835, 840, 845, 850, 855, 860, 990. Depending upon the
hardware mainframe, different product numbers will apply.
Refer to page 2 of the Request for Software Product Update
Materials form for appropriate product numbers.
These products are available on NOS 2.5.2 level 670, NOS 2.5.2
level 678 and NOS 2.5.3 level 688. Therefore, ensure that
the level you are ordering agrees with the NOS level you have
ordered or are operating on. Keep in mind that the current
NOS level of these applications may not always agree with
the most current released NOS level.
40.2 B. description of release (title page)
B. DESCRIPTION OF RELEASE
This release of PLATO Lesson Delivery and Authoring 1
and PLATO Courseware Development and Delivery System
(PCD2) software includes corrective code.
PLATO Lesson Delivery and Authoring 1
The added features and enhancements are:
40.2.1 description of operations features
1. New Features.
a. Operations features.
* Code has been added to all notes programs (general notes,
personal notes, TERM-comments/pnotes) to anticipate the
date ( 1 January 1989 ) when the notes datefield would
have overflowed. This code will remain dormant until
1 January 1988, after which the following 'invisible'
changes will occur:
- general and personal notefiles created will have a
new year-offset field to adjust the dates on notes.
- any clean up operation (archive/delete/compress) on
general and personal notes will incorporate the new
year-offset and adjust the dates on existing notes.
(after cleanup, notes with dates older than 1976
will display dates as "written before 1976" because
of the limit on the maximum age of a note in a file.
Dates on already archived notes will not be affected).
*** NOTE ***
Notefiles, once so modified on an R39.1
system will not display correct dates if
shipped to a pre-R39.1 system. (ie: the
internal format of dates is altered under
R39.1, and pre-R39.1 systems wont be able
to properly display the new date format).
These changes are, for the most part,
invisible in normal usage, with the
exception of a new prompt which will
appear every few years to indicate the
clean up options need to be run on the
file.
* The modifications to dates in "notes" include a new
message from "pnotes". If the pnote file has an old
baseyear (value of > 15 years behind the current year),
then no new pnotes can be stored, and notes will be
rejected with a message of: Group cannot receive
pnotes until cleanup is run. The cleanup option is in
the group editor, "records".
* An error in "link" which caused the link runner to
loop endlessly has been corrected. The error
condition ( any message with an invalid system name )
will write a 3rd line message giving the time the
illegal note arrived.
* A new option has been added to "ipedit" to permit sites
to create their own "Welcome to PLATO" display. To
implement such a customized display, select the "see/edit
customized display" option (c) from the "'Welcome to
PLATO' display" choice (e) on the main "ipedit" index.
You will be jumped out to lesson "platouse". Select
"userlogo". There is sample code in the block. There
are numerous cautions, in =ipedit= and in block "read me"
in "platouse".
NOTE: If the code you create contains condense errors
your system will NOT come up, and lesson =platouse=
will have to be restored from your distribution tapes.
* Procedure MFTCOPY was changed to avoid a conflict with
the NOS 678 BLANK command. When copying a masterfile
to tape, the tape VSN now defaults to "zzzzzmf".
* A problem dealing with > 2M words of UEM at NOS level
678 and above was corrected.
* Two serious problems with multi-executor systems were
corrected -- the "lesson deleted" & "mastor dead"
problems. These problems did NOT affect single-
executor systems.
40.2.5 description of user features
b. User features.
* "mod(x,N)" which returns 0 to N-1 and "mod1(x,N)"
which returns 1 to N were added to TERM-calc.
* While editing the contents of a TUTOR block, the ANS
key will now show the current filename in place of the
"SPACE = xx" information. This feature is useful when
jumping from file to file via the "J-stack" option.
* A minor problem with lengthening instructor files
(from the curriculum special options menu) is fixed.
No data were lost, but it was necessary to exit the
curriculum and re-enter it after lengthening.
* An option has been added to the notesfile sequencer to
permit transferring^ a sequence to another signon. The
sequencer editing options are reached by pressing LAB
from the main menu in "notes" ("N" from the Author Mode
display).
* The system download utility for PC's has been improved.
To upgrade your Packager disks, go into =floppypc=,
select the option to download a lesson, and download
file "s0pcld4". You should download to a different
filename, e.g. - "ns0pcld4". After the file has been
received, use the DOS "rename" command to change your
disk copy of "s0pcld4" to "os0pcld4"; then copy "ns0pcld4"
to "s0pcld4". Download times may be decreased by as
much as 65% at 1200 bps.
